Our Braamfontein store was our first ever TOMS store, and started out in Johannesburg CBD in 1978. At first, TOMS was called That Other Music Shop, which eventually turned into The Only Music Shop, and was later shortened to TOMS. However, The Only Music Shop was kept as the store’s slogan and is still used today.

Abe, our store manager (see photo in the gallery) has been with TOMS since the age of 18. When the original store opened in Bree street in 1978, Abe got hired as a cleaner. But because he was fluent in both English and Afrikaans, he began to help out the sales guys by translating for them when they couldn’t speak their customers’ home language. He could also read and write, and so he began taking post to and from the local post office, and sorting it into piles for the store. Soon, the manager of the store noticed him, and he got promoted. He slowly began working himself up, and eventually became the store manager after the new store opened. In 1982, our store relocated to Braamfontein, where it is still located today.

Braamfontein is one of the most culturally rich and diverse areas in Johannesburg, and it is known as a place where artists and musicians can express themselves. This makes it the perfect area for our music store. Currently our store is undergoing renovations, which will result in it being one of the biggest freestanding stores in Africa. However, the store is still open while renovations are underway, and our team is eager to find the perfect instrument for any muso coming into our store!
